Safe Water First: Building NeelGyan's RO Plant

Every student who studies here needs one thing before books — safe drinking water. In our village, that is harder than it sounds. Our borewell is only about 100 feet deep, runs at roughly 500 TDS, and sits right next to a soak pit. So the real risk is not just hard, salty water — it is contamination: bacteria, nitrates and organics that can seep into shallow groundwater.

We could have bought a cheap, off-the-shelf RO. Instead we did our homework and designed a proper commercial-grade, multi-stage plant — and sent the feed water for a NABL lab test (TDS, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, iron, hardness and bacteria) so we knew exactly what we were treating.

The result is a full purification train: sediment and carbon pre-treatment, antiscalant dosing, two booster pumps driving four RO membranes (about 50 litres per hour, 250 litres a day), remineralisation to balance the taste — and, crucially, UV as the final step right before the sealed dispenser, the safety net that kills anything the membranes might miss.

Because our source is a shallow borewell next to a soak pit, we treat water safety as ongoing — the dispenser is sealed and sanitised regularly, and we re-test the bacteriology every few months.

Now every student and visitor gets safe, clean, great-tasting drinking water — free, 24×7. As one of our students put it: “पानी का स्वाद पहले से बहुत बेहतर हਜ” — the water tastes much better than before.
